Join Blog Action Day 2011!

October 16th is Blog Action Day, and this year's topic is FOOD -- a topic that could hardly be more appropriate, since Blog Action Day coincides with World Food Day, which is also October 16th.


Join Us!

As of October 11th, nearly 1500 bloggers from 80 countries were registered to take part in Blog Action Day this year. If you're a blogger, why not join us by getting involved this year! Participating is easy: Simply register your blog at the Blog Action Day website and then publish a post about FOOD on October 16th. Your post can focus on any aspect of the topic. For a few ideas and a list of suggested topics, visit the Why Food? page of the Blog Action Day site.


Suggested Food-Related Topics

You might want to draw attention to world hunger -- a very critical topic in today's world -- or focus on hunger in a specific area, either at home or abroad. Perhaps you'd prefer to focus on healthful food choices, getting back to basics, and moving away from the highly processed products the food industry is foisting upon us to line its pockets, while increasingly eroding our health. There are tons of related topics and just as many angles from which you can approach them. You may even decide to cover more than one food-related topic. Whatever you decide to write about, please do participate and help draw attention to a subject that is crucial to every person on earth.


Collect Your Links

If I might take it a step further, I'd like to recommend that you gather any links you may have to food-related organizations that are helping to make a difference -- or even food-related resources that can help others improve their own food choices -- and add these to your post. In that way, you'll be helping those dedicated organizations make a difference, while also encouraging people to improve their own and their families' health and well-being through wiser and more intentional food-related practices.

My Recent Silence

I know it's been quiet here at Writer's Notes lately, for which I humbly and sincerely apologize. My writing workload has increased over the past few months, and it's been tough finding the time for everything I'd like to do. Hopefully, as I become more acclimated to my new projects, it will become easier to find the time to blog here more regularly--even if my posts might need to be shorter than I like them to be. That said, let's move on to the main reason for this post...


My Latest Blogging Project

Brad Shorr, who pens the Word Sell Blog, has invited me to become a regular contributer there, and I'm honored to accept his invitation. I've always admired Brad's work and have co-blogged with him before, though I haven't had the pleasure of doing so at Word Sell until now. All of us live incredibly busy lives, but one great thing about AOC 3 (and its predecessors) is that each author's contribution to the project is a single 400-word chapter on his/her chosen topic. So you can see that this isn't an extremely time-consuming project. In fact, I'm confident that if you decide to get involved, you'll actually enjoy this wonderful opportunity to wax eloquent on whatever aspect of Web relations ignites your passion and sparks your imagination. An AOC chapter is the equivalent of a medium-length blog post or a short essay; so most writers/bloggers should have no trouble at all fitting it into their schedules.

The B2B Blogging Gig I Couldn't Refuse

Back in November, my good blogging friend, Brad Shorr, of Word Sell, Inc., offered me a gig I simply couldn't refuse. He invited me on board as co-author of The Whoa Factor, an SEO/SEM blog that Brad's been writing since 2006. It seemed his previous co-writer was leaving and he needed a replacement. Whoast's Baby: A Chip off the Old Block?

Now that you know a bit about Whoast, I'd like to share a recent accomplishment of its "baby," The Whoa Factor blog:

Recently, while busily working behind the scenes, quietly yet doggedly pursuing the best SEM and SEO info on the Web, I received a Google Alert informing me that, like Whoast (its parent company), The Whoa Factor had just been recognized as one of the "Best Blogs on the Net." I learned that TopRank CEO Lee Odden had included The Whoa Factor in his BIGLIST SEO Blog Reviews for February 2, 2009, thereby adding TWF to his BIGLIST of Search Marketing Blogs at TopRank Online Marketing. This was indeed an honor for both Brad and me, since Lee Odden has been sharing his considerable SEM/SEO expertise at TopRank since 2003.


My Second Honor at The Whoa Factor

Earlier today, I also learned from Brad that one of my Whoa Factor posts has received recognition from BtoB Magazine, a major Chicago-based publication (circulation 45,000) and business website focusing on marketing strategy. (Whoast is itself based in Chicago.) It seems that my post, Landing Pages: What Makes a Good One? has caught the eye of Tequia Burt, Senior Editor of BtoB, who has added it to the February 13th edition of the BtoB Blog Roundup,* making it one of its three Blog Posts of the Week. This is also quite an honor and actually a bit humbling, if the truth be told. As a relatively new SEM blogger, I must admit that I'm a trifle overwhelmed—but in a good way.


A Few Words of Thanks

I'd like to thank Brad for having enough faith in my ability to invite me on board at The Whoa Factor. I truly do consider it an honor to co-write this blog with a writer and business professional of Brad's caliber. And I'm equally honored to blog for a company with the fabulous reputation that Whoast has earned both through its fine work and its integrity. To the folks at Whoast I'd like to say Thanks for putting Brad in charge of The Whoa Factor—not because he's offered me this amazing gig (well, maybe partly), but (mainly) because he's the best individual for the job. (But, of course, you already knew that.) Thanks, too, for being a company I can be proud to blog for. An Apology to My Writer's Notes Readers

Just thought I'd share my latest professional endeavor with all of you, along with my profuse apologies that my blogging here at Writer's Notes has decreased considerably of late. This hasn't been solely due to my blogging at The Whoa Factor but has been more the result of combining so many different writing, editing, and church-related administrative projects that there just aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish everything I'd like to do. So, please bear with me, as I attempt to better organize and balance my workload by choosing my gigs wisely and becoming more adept at working smarter, not harder.

Do You Have a HandPrints On My Heart Story?

Are you (or do you know) a female author with a story to tell about a special individual whose influence has been life-changing? If so, Marlene Moore Gordon would like to see your story and consider it for possible inclusion in her upcoming book, HandPrints On My Heart.

Marlene is seeking "personal real-life short stories written to acknowledge someone who has made a significant difference in the writer’s life," and her hope is that the "universal emotions" expressed in these stories "will touch the hearts of people worldwide who read, hear and see (them)."


My Own HandPrints Submission and Experience

A short time back, I contacted Marlene about her project, after discovering her call for submissions at LifeWriter's Market Watch. (You'll find other writing markets on this site, as well. Be aware that, as new projects are added, older ones move toward the bottom of the webpage. So, you may need to scroll down quite a bit to locate the HandPrints announcement.) I submitted an inspirational story I'd written about my paternal grandmother but had never published. She accepted my piece and we then went through a few rounds of editing to improve the piece and make it more suitable to the tone she had in mind for the stories. (I found her very pleasant to work with and quite receptive to my editorial input, which is always a plus for a writer whose work is undergoing the editing process.)


The HandPrints On My Heart Website and Guidelines

You'll find more information about this fascinating project at the HandPrints On My Heart website. Marlene's Submission Guidelines will give you all the information you'll need to submit your own story.


A Few HandPrints Business Details

While Marlene is still seeking a publisher for HandPrints On My Heart, she already has a literary agent. Monetary compensation for the project is still undetermined and will be presented to all accepted authors in writing for their approval once a publisher has been signed. Marlene expects compensation to be comparable to that offered by other similar anthologies, such as A Cup of Comfort and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Rights purchased will be non-exclusive, one-time rights.


Will You Help Spread the Word?

Marlene is interested in spreading the word about the HandPrints On My Heart book project. So, if you're a blogger whose niche is writing and/or publishing, you might want to consider writing a post about her project. I wrote this post in response to a request by John for enough guest posts to run through the month of June to help him take a much needed month-long vacation. I was honored that, in addition to his general call for guest posts, John also sent me an e-mail inviting me personally to submit a post. (How could I refuse?) Seriously, though, I'd already planned to submit a post but really appreciated John's reminder. It's definitely an honor to have my work appearing at John Hewitt's Writer's Resource Center!


WRC Post Involves a Contest With an Impressive Grand Prize!

What makes this WRC "gig" even more special, though, is that John is offering a $250 prize to the writer whose guest post receives the most traffic during the first week it graces his site! That's definitely a prize worth pursuing--even if I would have submitted a guest post anyway! So, I'd like to ask my readers to stop by WRC to check out my post--even if you aren't that interested in essay writing--though I promise that you will take home some helpful tips for other types of writing, as well. I'm still very new at it, but I'm planning to write quite a few guides each week. Work.com guides are aimed at small to medium-sized business owners and/or decision-makers and offer tips, techniques, advice, and online resources to help them complete tasks, solve problems, implement processes, choose products and services, manage employees, and basically do whatever else they need to do to keep their businesses thriving.


Putting My Business Background to Work

Though it's a great deal of work, I'm enjoying this opportunity for putting my education, experience, and research skills to work in an area that interests me. I've taken some business courses in college and hold a Customer Service Certificate (in addition to my AA--which isn't in Business, but in General Studies). I've taken courses in Management & Supervision and Human Relations in Business, based both on personal interest and the potential for using them in future employment. My Customer Service Certificate required 10 day-long seminars on a variety of interesting business-related topics, which have added a good deal to my business knowledge base. I also hold Wine Industry and Wine Hospitality Certificates. In addition, I have experience helping to run a pivate music-teaching business, and I myself am a notary public.


Work.com Research: Right Up My Alley

My business background helps a great deal in writing Work.com guides, but equally important is my penchant for research, because a great deal of online research is required to locate the valuable resources that are an indispensable part of every Work.com guide. When writing a Work.com guide, we don't just tell businesspeople to research a topic or find a product for their business; we do the research for them, showing them where they can find the information and other resources that they don't have time to track down on their own. We do that by linking to the resources they need, and in that way, we make their lives--and jobs--that much easier.


Apology for My Sparser Blog Posting Schedule

So, please forgive me if I've been neglecting my blog just a bit, lately. (And, to my blogging friends: Forgive me if I've been neglecting to visit and comment on your blog, lately.) This gig is keeping me quite busy, as I learn the ropes and acclimate myself to the guides' format. I'm hoping that, as I gain more experience writing them, I'll find the guides becoming increasingly easier and less time-consuming to complete.

Are You a Business Writer?

But hurry, because the deadline (which has already been extended once), is February 3rd! (My apologies for posting about the project so late! I only just came on board myself the other day and then was without internet all day today due to computer parts issues. Finally managed to use a part intended for a slightly different use to restore my internet access, though; and now I'm back up and running.)

Sugar & Spice Anthology Needs More Conventional Online Poetry Written By Women

Gerald Bosacker of Bosacker Books, is putting together a poetry anthology, to be entitled Sugar & Spice. This compilation of the works of various female poets which have already appeared online in one internet venue or other will be comprised of conventional, mostly rhymed and metered poetry.

A number of my own poems will be included in the anthology, and I wanted to share this opportunity with my female readers who have written poetry of this type and had it published--or may yet have it published--online. Remuneration will likely be small; however, your inclusion in the anthology would give you one more--or perhaps your first?--published clip. And since it will be in a print publication, it will likely carry a bit more weight among future potential publishers than an online publishing credit, as it's generally so much easier to be published online.


The Opportunity, In Mr. Bosacker's Own Words

Here's what Mr. Bosacker had to say to me in an e-mail written in response to my submissions back in July:

If your intent is monetary compensation, refuse permission as the financial yield will not be great. I sell poetry, and receive but a small fee, even from large magazines. I do take pleasure in the paid recognition, no matter how small. SUGAR & SPICE does not auger huge sales, but all of the royalties will be divided amongst the authors, in proportion to their share of print. I will not contribute, nor share royalties. I have no idea how well the anthology will sell, but it is not a scam, nor profit making venture.

Anthology Release Delayed Due to "Scarcity of Good, Conventional Poetry, Written By Women and Posted on the Internet"

Mr. Bosacker had hoped to release Sugar & Spice by October 1st, but has had trouble amassing enough good conventional poetry written by women which has been published on the internet. His latest correspondence of a few weeks ago informs me that, at this point, he only has about one-third of the poetry he needs to fill the 200-page book. At that rate, it could be a while before the book goes to print--unless the internet poetesses among us will begin submitting our best work ASAP.

While Sugar & Spice will likely not be a high-profit venture for those of us whose work is included, there is always the possibility that it will sell better than Mr. Bosacker expects. Whether or not it does will no doubt--in part, at least--be dependent upon how much buzz we ourselves are able to create for the book via our websites, blogs, word-of-mouth, and possibly even through asking our fellow writers and bloggers for their help in spreading the word.


Are You a Conventional Female Poet Who Has or Will Soon Put Your Work Online?

If you are a female poet and you have some well-crafted conventional poetry sitting in the bottom drawer of your desk, the back of your closet, or even the darkest corners of your garage or attic, you might just want to consider digging it out, reassessing its quality and appropriateness for this market, touching it up if needed, posting it on one of the online poetry websites* first, and then submitting it to Mr. Bosacker for the Sugar & Spice Poetry Anthology.

If your work is already posted online, so much the better! You will be able to submit it to the anthology with a minimum of hassle. So, scour the sites you've posted your work to, find your best poetic masterpieces, and consider submitting them if you'd like to be a part of this book project.

If you don't already have some conventional poetry hidden away somewhere--either online or off--but have the heart of a poet(ess), why not write a few poems, submit them to the poetry site(s), and then forward them to Mr. Bosacker. Send your best work, though, because Mr. B is looking for very well-executed conventional verse. Let's show him that good conventional poetry written by women and published on the internet isn't really as scarce as he thinks it is!

Get Paid to Blog at Smorty

Smorty, for My Australian Readers--and Everyone Else!

Since I've decided to add some carefully selected sponsored posts to my blog, in the interest of survival for myself and value for my readers, I thought I'd try Smorty, which is an Australian blog advertising site, and which, as such, might tend to offer products and services that my Aussie readers would really be able to relate to. I feel it has a lot to offer both me and my readers, and I intend to do my best to choose opportunities that are relevant to you, as writers; though I have to confess that I may occasionally just happen to choose a few that seem intriguing to me--and remember, I, too, am a writer--whether or not they relate to writing directly. (After all, writers have lives, too--outside of writing, that is--though at times it may not always seem that way!)


A Few Words About Smorty

At Smorty, as with most other sites where writers blog for money, advertisers pay bloggers to write opinion posts with links back to the advertiser's site. While this is great for us bloggers, who get paid to blog, it's also obviously beneficial to the businesses that advertise on blogs. This mutual benefit is the basis of every truly successful business transaction--and, for the writer, this includes the sale of our writing in any other venue. After all, this is what free enterprise is all about!

As I see it, if we bloggers pick and choose our advertising opportunities with care, our relationship with Smorty--or with any other blog advertising network--should not only benefit the company, the advertiser, and the blogger, but also the blog's readers, as well.

Bloggers Need Income, Too

If you are a blogger, you've probably noticed that the amount of revenue to be made via Google Adsense is, to put it kindly, minimal--unless, of course, you happen to be a Darren Rowse or a John Chow, or one of the other relatively few bloggers whose traffic stats are absolutely phenomenal (in which case, you probably won't need to read this). And, after all, few of us can afford to sit at home blogging all day with no likelihood of any sort of monetary reward for our efforts. Not that we wouldn't want to. Most of us love connecting with others through blogging, and that's the main reason we do it. Yet the realities of life remain: We must have a roof over our heads, food on the table, and all the rest.


Advertisers Need Value, Access, Flexibility, and Control

If you are an advertiser, you may be looking for good opportunities to feature your product or service without "breaking the bank." You may want to be able to turn over your advertising needs to a company that will find advertising outlets for you, while maintaining the option of also seeking and using other advertising venues you may come across on your own. After all, advertising budgets are finite, and whether your company is small or large, you want to make the most of your advertising dollar. And the fact of the matter is that "profit" isn't a dirty word. "Profit" is what puts a roof over the head of the advertiser and food on the business owner's table.

In both of the above cases, PayPerPost may have something to offer.


PayPerPost Marketplace

The PayPerPost Marketplace provides opportunities for bloggers and advertisers to connect, through listings in the PPP database. Advertisers list opportunities for bloggers to review their product or service by writing a blog post about it.* Whether or not a particular advertising opportunity is available to a given blogger is based upon the specific criteria the advertiser has decided on for the blogger he or she would like to feature his or her product or service (i.e., minimum Googe page rank, minimum Alexa ranking, etc.)--though not all opportunities require a Google page rank. Bloggers browse the list of opportunities and submit requests to handle the ones that interest them. If chosen, they have a limited time in which to write and post their reviews (6 hours, as I recall).

PPP Direct

Bloggers may also participate in PayPerPost Direct, in which they deal directly with advertisers, displaying a badge or text link on their blogs through which they offer to write posts for pay, setting their own prices, and/or negotiating with interested advertisers for compensation. They may either post a badge containing the cost of their posting services or choose to display a badge or text link which doesn't contain compensation information. When advertisers click on the badge or text link, they are taken to the PayPerPost website, through which the details of the transaction are handled.

"Review My Post": Another Opportunity for Bloggers

Another way for bloggers to earn a few dollars is through the "Get Paid to Review My Post" program. In this program, a button is posted at the end of each of a blogger's posts inviting other bloggers to review the post for pay. When an interested blogger clicks on the button, he or she is given the opportunity to sign up with PayPerPost and write a review of the blog post. In these instances, both the blogger who writes the review and the blogger whose post is reviewed receive a modest payment.

PayPerPost Affiliate Program

The PayPerPost Affiliate program offers bloggers still another opportunity for earning income by referring bloggers and advertisers to PayPerPost, as does the PayPerPost Signup program . (Details may be found on the PayPerPost website.)
