A Writer's Notes Archival Revival: Posts to Help Writers Succeed

September 6th 2007 07:14

Mining the Archival Abyss

With the speed at which new content is posted to many blogs today--including this one--older (though equally valuable) posts quickly become buried in the deep, dark recesses of the archival abyss, where they can do absolutely no good. So, in the interest of fairness to those who may not have read some of these earlier pieces, I've decided to resurrect those that I believe to be the most helpful, by linking to the original posts, here. (In fact, you'll find quite a few more links than might at first appear, since the first post on the list which follows is itself a list of links to other great articles on writing.)

Good post. I recently came to the realization that most of my best stuff was buried in the tomb of my archives. I may do a post like yours and I may make a "Featured Posts" section in my sidebar.

Thanks for reminding me

Hi, Ad Tracker!

So much valuable information sits languishing in so many blog archives that it's truly a shame! Hidden away from public view, it can't help anybody! That's why I think periodic "resurrection" posts are such a good idea! Most people would never bother to dig way back into our archives.

Thanks so much for the visit!

Thanks Jeanne for alerting me to the fact that my site URL was wrong on the above post. That's what happens late at night.

I think I got it right on this one ;P

Ad Tracker,

Great! I just tested the new link, and this time it works fine! Wouldn't want my readers to try to get to your site and be unable to!

Thank you for excellent collection of tips, especially the point about Google alerts and your blog.

We are about to start our blog and this article will ensure our posts are linked properly regularly to keep them in the limelight.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Glad to be of help! Every once in a while it's a great idea to resurrect older posts from our archives, because there's often a lot of treasure buried there!

I've personally found Google Alerts to be very helpful, and I'm happy to pass on my experience to others.

Best of luck to you in launching your blog!
Jeanne

Hi, Martin!

Thanks so much for your kind comment! Personally, I don't believe It's ever too late to leave a comment on a post that has helped us. That's one great thing about blogging: Our posts can go on helping people again and again -- often for a very long time!

At the same time, a lot of good content can become buried in our archives -- and though it can often be found via search, it can also languish there unseen by most of the people who visit our blogs. That's one thing I love about periodically linking to older blog posts. While it may be slightly less beneficial to those who have already read these posts (though even they can often benefit from a review), it can bring the content to the attention of new visitors who might otherwise never have found it.

Haven't done a post like this in a while. May have to do it again sometime soon!

Thanks again for the comment!

Jeanne
