SellBackYourBook.com: A Convenient Used Book Market

October 1st 2008 01:15

Books, Books Everywhere!

If you're anything like me, you've got quite a large collection of books--and that's putting it mildly! In fact, if you haven't taken stock lately, it's quite possible that you've got a much larger collection than you really need or even have enough room for. You may have writing books, textbooks, gardening books, health books, diet and nutrition books, fiction books--and all these in addition to the myriad reference books we writers would never be without.

If the above description sounds like you, you've probably noticed that your bookshelves are literally bulging with books. Or, perhaps you haven't noticed. After all, we writers are a busy lot, and it's easy for us to overlook a lot of what's going on in our environment while we're hard at work on that article, story, blog post, or chapter. Yet, it's quite possible that, while you've been busy working, your books have begun overflowing their shelves onto every convenient surface and into every available nook and cranny in your home or office, and you've simply been too busy to notice.

Now Is a Great Time to Take Stock of Your Book Collection

What better time could there be than now to pause, take stock, and consider selling some of the books you no longer need? Though parting with our beloved books can sometimes be tough, we can always benefit from cutting down on the clutter in our workspaces--as long as we make sure we hold on to those books that we really want or need. And if we can pick up a few bucks for the books we no longer need, we reap a double benefit.

SellBackYourBook.com Makes Selling Your Books Easy

Sell Back Your Book is a U.S. website that offers instant price quotes for your books. All you'll need to do to get a price quote is enter each book's ISBN into the proper field. (Books must be in good condition, as described on the site's FAQ page, for the price quote to be valid; quotes are good for 10 days.) The company covers 100% of shipping charges on purchases over $10 and 50% on purchases under $10. It also provides a free, pre-paid shipping label, which you can print out and use to avoid paying up-front shipping charges, meaning you won't be required to wait for reimbursement later. Payment for your books is made by either PayPal or check.

Sell TextBooks and More Online at Sell Back Your Book

College or homeschool textbooks, along with many other types of books, can be sold through the Sell Back Your Books website. And while the amount offered for each book is generally modest (my offers ranged from $1.70 to $8.50, with the vast majority falling somewhere in the middle of that range), you'll be able to pick up a little money for a box of books, while clearing out your living space for you and your family. I've managed to collect a batch of books for which they're willing to pay me about $50--which I don't consider to be bad at all for a stack of books I might have gotten rid of for nothing.

If you don't mind packing up your books, taking them to the post office to ship them, and waiting until the company receives them before you receive your money, this might be a great way for you to pick up a little extra cash for something you have lying around the house anyway which you aren't even using.

Happy de-cluttering!
Jeanne

Did you enjoy this post? Have any thoughts to share about keeping/selling/giving away used books? Do you have a large number of books that are causing your bookshelves to burst at the seams? Or are you good about getting rid of old books before buying too many new ones? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Jeanne, long ago I sold some books on Half.com and later on Amazon. Sellyourbooks.com sounds perfect. I would much rather ship a box of books than just one or two at a time. Then I can make room for new purchase. Thanks for sharing the resource. I think it's time for a little Fall cleaning!

Very cool.

I love my novels, but I do have plenty of text books.
Dont know if they would go down in the U.S. though...

Hi, Karen!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us! This post has really made me realize just how much I need to pare down my own book collection! It certainly would seem more convenient to ship an entire box of books than a few at a time!

Jarrah,

There does seem to be quite a market for textbooks these days--as well as many other types of books. I suspect, though, that you might not be able to ship them to the U.S. to sell. Your best bet would be to check with the company directly. If they aren't able to accept your shipment, perhaps another online book buyer would accept shipments from Australia.

Good luck, and thanks for the visit!

Janee, what great ideas to keep books circulating and possibly save a tree or two in the process.

I find that I buy fewer books - with the vast resources of the Internet so near.

In fact I recently got back a copyright of my own, from a major publisher so that I could put a textbook I wrote online.

It works much better to allow people to but a book for a bit less and then those who wish to print the book can, while others simply retain the book in digital form.

Great blog and a real keeper! Thanks for another set of creative and useful suggestions Jeanne.

Yikes, I meant to type Jeanne! Sorry for the typo!

Hi, Ellen!

This method of "recycling" books is great, because everybody benefits.

Good idea putting your book online. When people can pay a bit less for a book, often more will actually purchase it--making up for its lower price.

Glad you found this post to be of interest!

Thanks for stopping by!
Jeanne

P.S. No problem about the typos in my name! It happens to the best of us! That's why I wish comments were editable at Orble--and everywhere else!

Bookshelves? I've run out of bookshelf space. I have books stacked on the floor. Books on top of books. Books on my desk. Books in my file cabinet. Books in my nightstand. Books in boxes. Books on top of my printer. Books under my printer.

I don't need to get rid of books. I need a bigger house. Do you have any advice for that?

Dan,

You sound just like me! Believe me, I know the problem well! Some of my deeper shelves have books in front of books--as well as on top of them--my dining table has several different stacks of books on it, and right now my couch is even sporting a large pile of books--the ones I'm considering selling to SellBackYourBook.com!

A bigger house--now there's the answer! Why didn't I think of that? Now, as soon as I've figured out how to manage it without a huge rise in living expenses, I'll be sure to let you know!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your book obsession with us! It's great to know we have that in common!

Jeanne,
Since you're talking about books, I've tagged you for a book-related meme. If you'd like to participate, you can read about it on my blog.

Thanks, Lillie!

I've taken a look at your post, and it looks intriguing. I'll see if I can come up with enough interesting tidbits of book-related info to make joining in worthwhile.

So sorry I didn't manage to finish reading your manuscript in time for your book's publication! So many things have just conspired against it! Perhaps I'll still be able to write a review and post it somewhere once I've completed it--even if only on my blog!

Thanks for the visit!

Hope you can participate in the tag, Jeanne. And I really appreciate the offer to review the book.

I'll have to put my thinking cap on and see if I can manage a contribution to the meme. And I'd be happy to review your book once I've completed it.

I'd be interested if there was a service such as this in UK...Though I guess "good condition" is always going to be contentious!

Mark,

I'm only sorry that this particular service is limited to people in the US Don't really know whether there's one in the UK or not.

This website actually spells out precisely what it means by "good condition," and its incentive for making sure book sellers don't overvalue their books' condition is that they'll neither pay for nor return books that aren't in good enough condition. So, it would behoove the seller to examine each book carefully and make sure it meets the company's criteria before sending.

Great to see you!

Hi, "GT,"

Certainly don't mind sharing your link with my readers, but it would be nice to have a first name (rather than a keyword phrase) to respond to. As I'm sure you can appreciate, I much prefer the feeling of communicating with a real person to that of addressing and carrying on a conversation with a keyword or a website.

Anon,

Thanks for pointing out another option for selling used books. Will have to check it out.

(Would love to know who I'm thanking, though. Even just a first name is always nice. Hate to address people as "Anon" or "Anonymous." Don't you?)

Jeanne
